Yale School of Architecture Dean Deborah Berke to Present 'Current Work' Lecture on Sept. 30

The thin profile of the headquarters for Cummins' Global Distribution Business in Indianapolis, Indiana, preserves open space for a new urban park and reinforces the "street wall" of a major downtown thoroughfare.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Deborah Berke will present a lecture at 4 p.m. Monday, Sept. 30, in Ken and Linda Sue Shollmier Hall, Room 250 of Vol Walker Hall, on the University of Arkansas campus, as part of the Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design lecture series.

Berke, FAIA, LEED AP, is the founder of the New York-based architecture firm Deborah Berke Partners. She is also the dean of the School of Architecture at Yale University.

In her lecture, "Deborah Berke Partners: Current Work," Berke will explore the firm's human-centered approach to design at all scales and across building types and programs. From transforming old buildings for new futures to designing innovative new buildings that enrich their contexts, Deborah Berke Partners is known for the clarity and simplicity of its work and for its commitment to enhancing the daily life of the people who use the buildings and spaces the firm designs.

Since 1982, Deborah Berke Partners has created a body of work with a distinct and lasting character, all of which is informed by Berke's vision and values.

In 2013, Berke received the first Berkeley-Rupp award, which is given by the University of California at Berkeley to an architect who has advanced the position of women in the profession and whose work emphasizes a commitment to sustainability and community. In 2017, Deborah Berke Partners received the National Design Award from the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.

Berke has taught at the School of Architecture at Yale University since 1987. She is on the boards of the James Howell Foundation and the Yaddo Artist's Residency, and she is an honorary trustee of the Norman Foster Foundation.

Berke received a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Bachelor of Architecture from the Rhode Island School of Design and a Master of Urban Planning in Urban Design from The City University of New York. She received an Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts from the Rhode Island School of Design.

This is the Cromwell Architects Engineers Lecture in the Role of Engineering in Architecture and Design.

The school is pursuing continuing education credits for this lecture through the American Institute of Architects and the American Society of Landscape Architects.
