UAPD Warns of Phone Scams Demanding Money for Arrest Warrants
The University of Arkansas has a diverse mix of students, faculty and staff representing a wide range of countries and backgrounds. This blend of backgrounds often makes the university community a target for scammers who believe they can fool people who are not familiar with U.S. government procedures.
Recently, the University of Arkansas Police Department has received numerous reports of students, faculty and staff receiving scam phone calls claiming to be police. During these calls, individuals state there is a warrant for your arrest and that payment is required to avoid being arrested.
These calls are not from legitimate sources. Do not provide information or return phone calls these numbers. U.S. law enforcement, from any level of government, will never call individuals regarding an arrest warrant. Nor will they demand money to avoid arrest.
The Internal Revenue Service maintains a database of phishing, online and phone scams. Individuals who receive these should report them at www.irs.gov/privacy-disclosure/report-phishing.
