Promoting Scooter Safety and Security

Both the University of Arkansas Police Department and the University of Arkansas Transit and Parking Department remind scooter operators to take extra precaution to prevent accidents and to prevent scooter thefts.

UAPD is stepping up its efforts in this area as a result of numerous scooter thefts on and around campus this semester. They apprehended one individual believed to have been responsible for multiple scooter thefts.

UAPD Captain Gary Crain said it would be extremely helpful to notify the authorities if there is anything suspicious going on.

"If you see something, say something," he said. "The recent suspect walked around campus and loitered around scooter lots for several weeks. Students saw him but no one paid attention enough to give us a call."

UAPD and the UA Transit and Parking Department are working together on the scooter issue.

Transit and Parking sells locks for scooters and bicycles at cost. The price for a lock is $20 and it can be purchased at the Transit and Parking offices at 155 South Razorback Road.

Scooter owners, however, may purchase a lock anywhere. It does not have to be obtained through Transit and Parking.

But to deter theft, a lock is recommended nonetheless.

In addition, the departments recommend that all of those who operate scooters use protective gear for the eyes and for the head; and they emphasize roadway safety at all times.
