Seeking Students for First Generation Mentoring Program
Freshmen and sophomore students: are you the first in your family to go to college? You are not alone! First-generation college students make up about 20 percent of the U of A undergraduate population, both in honors and non-honors.
The Honors College is sponsoring a First Generation Mentoring Program. First generation freshman and sophomore students will be matched with caring faculty, including Chancellor Joe Steinmetz, who, through two meetings a semester, can help students learn more about some or all of the topics below:
- Navigating the university in general
- Becoming more involved at UA
- Navigating a career path
- Exploring international education opportunities
- Becoming an honors student, if interested
- Finding an honors research mentor
- Balancing family/school/work
- Learning more about community engagement: how to give back to the community
This program is open to all freshmen and sophomores — both honors and non honors students. However, space is limited so sign up on the First Generation Mentoring Program Application. Deadline is midnight Wednesday, Sept. 14, or when all spaces are full, whichever comes first.
Faculty and students will be informed of their match by email. Then, the Honors College will host a "Meet and Greet" on from 3:30-5 p.m. Thursday Sept. 27, in the Honors College Lounge for mentors and mentees to meet and mingle. You need not attend the Meet and Greet to be part of the program.
