Virtual Desktops Installed During Break: Focus on Improved Experience, Setting the Stage for Future Mobility
The VDI team prepares new technology infrastructure to serve student computer labs.
Over spring break, three computer labs on campus will be outfitted with a new technology that sets the stage for changing the student experience forever. The new technology, known as VDI (virtual desktop infrastructure), will be installed in computer labs in the Arkansas Union, J.B. Hunt Center for Excellence and Northwest Quad B. The upgraded labs will feature larger monitors and a powerful new experience for students. Sound interesting? Read on.
In each upgraded lab, PCs are linked to a central server on campus that issues a virtual Windows desktop, providing a better user experience free from the usual errors and crashes of the past.
Additionally, labs with VDI have lower energy consumption, reduced downtime and maintenance costs, and the ability to instantly apply updates and patches. This means VDI labs are more reliable than traditional computer labs.
Most importantly, this upgrade is the first step toward a comprehensive mobile experience, which will within the next few years allow students, faculty and staff to access their desktops from anywhere using any device. That's the power of virtual desktops, and it's on the horizon here at the University of Arkansas.
"This marks a turning point in how we think about student lab access, and this paradigm shift will eventually lead to ubiquitous virtual labs. With efficient and reliable technology that they can access from anywhere using any device, students will be better positioned with tools they need for their success," Chris McCoy, chief information office and associate vice chancellor for technology, said.
McCoy will unveil the upgraded lab during a special CIO Chat event open to the university community from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 21, in the Arkansas Union Connections Lounge.
During spring break, the following labs will be closed for upgrades:
- Arkansas Union, closed Monday, closed March 20.
- J.B. Hunt Center for Excellence, closed March 21.
- Northwest Quad B, closed March 20-24 for VDI and additional renovations.
