sUgAR Gallery Presents: Material Spaces by Students in the Architecture Department

The University of Arkansas Student Gallery, sUgAR, will host an opening reception for the exhibition, Material Spaces, from 5:30-8 p.m. Thursday, March 9, in sUgAR Gallery, located at 1 East Center on the downtown Fayetteville Square. This exhibition will be on display through April 6 with open gallery hours on Saturdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

This exhibit looks at the translation from idea to drawing to model through materiality by students in the Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design department of architecture. Architects don't physically make buildings but instead make physical simulacra of buildings and building environments using both 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional representations. The material choices and their assembly effect the expression of the maker's pure idea. Looking at the material spaces between idea and building reveals just how unlike either idea or building the representation of building is. The show explores the way an idea about a building can be conveyed through multiple media and technologies of representation. The exhibit includes work from beginning design students in their first year to advanced students completing their fifth year of study.
