Michelle Wilson Memorial Scholarship Honors Her Life and Legacy

An agent of change, servant leader, active citizen, and advocate for academic success are all things that best described Michelle Wilson. These qualities are what the ladies of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. had in mind when establishing the Michelle Wilson Memorial Scholarship over 25 years ago. Her passion for justice was evident in her preoccupation with making a difference.

From Helena, her love of justice did not stop with community service. Michelle wanted to become the first female attorney of her generation, and was well on her way as she graduated from the U of A Law School in 1992. Due to her complications with Lupus, she was unable to take the bar exam. Lupus is a chronic, autoimmune disease that can damage any part of the body. Currently, there are nearly 1.5 million Americans that have lupus. This disease typically affect mostly women ages 15-44. Women of color are two to three times more likely to develop lupus than Caucasians.

The women of Delta Sigma Theta host an annual walk-a-thon in memory of their sister Michelle Wilson. Through this initiative, we have been able to raise awareness by making an annual contribution to the Lupus Foundation and by providing scholarships to U of A students. In honor of our sister, we would like to extend U of A students the opportunity to apply for the 2017 Michelle Wilson Scholarship. Two scholarships will be awarded to deserving students. All applications are due on March 17.
