Health Center Seeing Increased Number of Flu Cases; Urges Campus to Take Necessary Precautions

The Pat Walker Health Center has seen 134 cases of the flu since the start of spring semester (57 of which were diagnosed earlier in the week) and urges the campus community to take appropriate measures to protect themselves from contracting the virus.

The number of cases already seen is significantly more than this time last year, so the health center encourages you to get the flu vaccine, practice good respiratory hygiene and seek medical treatment if you experience flu-like symptoms.

"We are seeing more and more students with confirmed cases of influenza," says Lyn Edington, RNC, director of nursing for the health center. "We encourage everyone to take the necessary prevention measures and get a flu vaccine, which is the best way to protect yourself against the virus."

Flu vaccines are available at the health center by calling the Allergy, Immunization and Travel Clinic at 479-575-7723 to make an appointment. The cost of the flu vaccine is $20 for students and $50 for faculty and staff. If you have health insurance, please bring your insurance card with you as these costs are covered by most health care plans.

Help prevent spreading and contracting the flu

The health center encourages you to practice good respiratory hygiene by:

  • Covering your cough or sneeze with your elbow or a tissue.
  • Washing your hands with soap and water frequently, especially before touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
  • Disinfecting frequently touched surfaces and objects.
  • Avoiding contact with anyone who is sick.
  • Staying home from work/class if experiencing symptoms.

Students, faculty and staff who experience flu-like symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, headache, fatigue and body aches, are advised to seek medical treatment in a timely manner to reduce the severity of the flu.

Know what to do if you get the flu

Knowing what to do if you get the flu may help you feel better sooner and prevent others from becoming sick. See the health center's handout on Navigating the Flu.

The health center offers a walk-in clinic — RazorCare — available for same day diagnosis and treatment. Physicians have been preparing diligently for the increase in flu cases. If you are suffering from flu-like symptoms, head over to the RazorCare clinic, located on the first floor in the Primary Care Clinic.
