Summer Literacy Camp Available for NWA Elementary Students

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The University of Arkansas Global Campus and College of Education and Health Professions have partnered to offer a summer literacy camp for local elementary students July 25 through Aug. 5. Participants must register online by May 30.

Local students who have completed kindergarten or grades 1-5 and have a teacher recommendation can attend. Seats are limited and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

Licensed teachers and/or graduate students enrolled in literacy and dyslexia assessment and intervention courses will screen participants. Following screening, individual intervention plans will be developed and implemented on a one-on-one basis. Students will leave with a report of recommendations for classroom teachers and parents.

Participants will develop phonemic awareness, phonics skills, vocabulary knowledge, fluency and comprehension skills. The camp – located at Washington Elementary School, 425 N. Highland Ave., Fayetteville – will begin each day at 9 a.m. and end at noon.

The cost of the camp is $99, and a 10 percent discount is available for children of U of A faculty, staff, students, and Alumni Association members. Scholarships are also available.

“Summer reading camps have the potential to stop summer loss, which may improve students’ reading skills, narrow the achievement gap in reading, and increase students’ desire to read,” said Linda Eilers.

Eilers, a clinical associate professor of childhood education for the College of Education and Health Professions, is coordinating the camp. The same camp also offers professional development opportunities for teachers through the Clinic for Literacy.
