Edward A. Pohl, professor and department head of industrial engineering, was recognized as a Fellow by the Society of Reliability Engineers. Fellow status is the highest honor of the society and recipients must have contributed to and attained distinction in reliability-related disciplines. The presentation ceremony was held at the Reliability and Maintainability Symposium held in Tucson, Arizona, in January.

The Reliability and Maintainability Symposium helps government and industry leaders become better partners by bringing producers and consumers of reliable and maintainable products and services together to discuss and engage on a host of topics such as achieving affordable reliability and maintainability programs, controlling reliability test costs throughout the life-cycle, incentivizing industry in reliability and maintainability, improving reliability process efficiency and payback, and promoting more effective competition.

Before coming to the University of Arkansas, Pohl spent 21 years in the United States Air Force where he served in a variety of engineering, operations analysis and academic positions during his career. Previous assignments include the deputy director of the Operations Research Center at the United States Military Academy, operations analyst in the Office of the Secretary of Defense where he performed independent cost schedule, performance and risk assessments on major Department of Defense acquisition programs, and as a munitions logistics manager at the Air Force Operational Test Center.

He received his Doctor of Philosophy in systems and industrial engineering from the University of Arizona. He holds Master of Science degrees in systems engineering from the Air Force Institute of Technology, in reliability engineering from the University of Arizona and in engineering management from the University of Dayton, and a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Boston University. His primary research interests are in risk, reliability, engineering optimization, healthcare and supply chain risk analysis, decision making, and quality.

Pohl is also a Fellow of the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers (formerly IIE).  He is active in numerous national and regional professional societies and currently serves as the vice president for the Society of Reliability Engineers, regional director of the American Society for Engineering Management, and is a board member for IIE Society of Engineering Management.  In addition he is a senior member of IEEE, senior member of ASQ, a diplomate in the Society of Health Systems, a member of INCOSE, INFORMS and AHRMM. He also holds designation as a Certified Materials and Resource Professional.
