Landscape Architecture Department Head Candidates for Fay Jones School to Visit Campus, Hold Forums

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The three final candidates for the position of the head of the Department of Landscape Architecture in the Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design at the University of Arkansas will visit campus over the last three weeks of February for interviews and public forums.

The candidates are Fernando Magallanes of North Carolina State University, Ken McCown of Iowa State University and Timothy Baird of The Pennsylvania State University. Each Wednesday, starting Feb. 10, each candidate will make a public presentation at 1 p.m. in Ken and Linda Sue Shollmier Hall, Room 250 of Vol Walker Hall.

Carl Matthews, professor and head of the Department of Interior Design, led the 11-member search committee, which included members of the faculty, staff, alumni, student body and campus community.

Fernando Magallanes is an associate professor in landscape architecture in the College of Design at North Carolina State University. He will make a presentation at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 10.

Magallanes received a Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture from Texas A&M University and a Master in Landscape Architecture and Site Planning from Harvard University. He has taught at North Carolina State University since 1987. He served as graduate program director from 2005-2014. From 2005-2009, he was associate professor of landscape architecture and urban design at the North Carolina State Prague Institute in Prague, Czech Republic. Previously, he was a visiting professor at Michigan State University and an instructor at the University of Texas at San Antonio and at San Antonio State College. He is in professional practice in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Ken McCown is professor and chair of the Department of Landscape Architecture in the College of Design at Iowa State University. He will make a presentation at 1 p.m. Feb. 17.

McCown received a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture and a Master of Architecture, both from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Prior to joining the Iowa State University, he was director of the Downtown Design Center and the Lincy University Professor at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Previously, he was at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, where he taught in landscape architecture and architecture, taught in the architecture study abroad program in Finland and was chairman of the landscape architecture graduate program. He had earlier appointments at Arizona State University, California Polytechnic State University and the University of Illinois. He has also worked professionally as a designer, project manager and design consultant.

Timothy Baird is professor of landscape architecture in the Stuckeman School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture, in the College of Arts and Architecture at The Pennsylvania State University. He will make a presentation at 1 p.m. Feb. 24.

Baird received a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture from Louisiana State University and a Master of Landscape Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania. Prior to joining The Pennsylvania State University in 2000, he had appointments at The Ohio State University, Texas Tech University, Harvard University, the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Fine Arts and Louisiana State University. He is adjunct principal at Landworks Studio, Inc. in Boston.
