Chemical engineering graduate student Zizhao Liu was recently selected as a finalist for EMD Millipore's 2015 Life Science Award Program. The award is given to students who conduct cutting-edge research and show potential as future leaders in the field of bioseparations.

Supervised by professor Xianghong Qian and co-supervised by professor Ranil Wickramasinghe, Zizhao was selected for his innovative design and synthesis of novel ligands for membrane-based protein purifications. The novel adsorptive membranes developed could enable bio-pharmaceutical companies to produce antibodies more efficiently and cost effectively.

He will be presenting his research on Oct. 23 in Boston. There he will compete against three other candidates, where the selections committee will determine a winner to receive $10,000.
