Dance is not only a great way to challenge muscles that are not heavily used in everyday activities such as walking, but it can contribute to mental, social, and emotional wellness as well. Move your body and challenge your mind with three diverse dance styles offered by University Recreation this semester.

Social Dance is a way to learn some of the most recognizable dance styles. This class is geared towards beginners who would like to learn foundational skills to be able to dance a variety of styles. Participants will learn the basics of ballroom styles such as the waltz, tango, and cha cha, as well as some sizzling salsa moves. This six-week session will be held on Wednesday nights from Sept. 9 to Oct. 14.

UREC is excited to welcome Afrique Aya to teach African Dance on Tuesday evenings from Sept. 8 to Oct. 13. This group of dancers and drummers will lead participants through cultural dance movements set to traditional west African drum rhythms. Celebrate the synergy of nature and spirit in this uplifting and beginner-oriented class.

Bollywood Dance is another unique style that will be offered during the fall 2015 semester. A product of the Indian film industry, Bollywood dance reflects a fusion of classical heritage and modern pop culture. Classical Indian dance styles often use movements to reflect and interpret song lyrics. This class will teach the basics of these movements, mixed with a modern hip-hop flair.  Students will progress to choreographing a dance in the Bollywood style. This six-week session will be held on Tuesday evenings from Oct. 17 to Dec. 1.

Cost for all sessions is $40 for U of A students, $55 for UREC members, and $70 for eligible non-UREC members, including U of A faculty/staff and Arkansas Alumni Association members. Not sure if the class is for you? Try the first week free! If you decide to register, simply do so before the second week's class. U of A students and faculty/staff can register online at UREC Member Services. Participants can also register at the UREC main office in HPER 225.
