East Asian History Scholar Joins Department of History

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - East Asian history specialist Kelly Hammond will join the Department of History in the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences this fall as an assistant professor. She comes to the University of Arkansas from the Georgetown School of Foreign Service in Qatar where she served as a research fellow.

Hammond's many research interests include Islam in China, Islam in Central Asia, Japanese imperialism and the Pacific War, late imperial and modern China, and masculinity in Asia. Awards from the Chinese Scholarship Council and the Canadian Social Science and Humanities Research Council helped to fund her studies, which resulted in her dissertation, The conundrum of collaboration: Japanese involvement with Muslims in North China, 1931-1945.

"We look forward to welcoming Dr. Hammond and seeing her research unfold," said Kathryn Sloan, department chair. "Her focus on the complex relationship between Chinese nationalists, Japanese imperialists and Chinese Muslims in an intensive era of nation-building and war is captivating."

Hammond has worked as a writer for the National Geographic Society and Cengage Learning and has been a guest on the Ottoman History Podcast. She is a member of the Association for Asian Studies, the American Historical Association and the Central Eurasian Studies Society.

"I am so happy to be working in Fulbright College," said Hammond. "The Department of History has a stellar reputation, and I hope to be a great asset to the faculty."

She holds a Bachelor of Arts in history and political science from Bishop's University, a Master of Arts in East Asian history from Simon Fraser University and a doctorate in East Asian history from Georgetown University.
