International Culture Team Recognizes Student Volunteers, Campus Communities

The University of Arkansas International Culture Team recently held an awards banquet to celebrate student volunteers' achievements in bringing the world to the Northwest Arkansas community through cultural presentations, demonstrations, performances and cooking.

The team is a volunteer organization that brings global education to the U of A campus, local schools, businesses and community organizations throughout Northwest Arkansas.  Significant events that were a part of 2014-15 year on campus were Plaza de las Americas, International Education Week, International Women's Day and the Panamanian Immersion.  During the past year, 350 International Culture Team members from 62 countries provided cultural lectures and performances for more than 11,200 children and adults.

Members of the International Culture Team Award and Scholarship Committee selected and recognized accomplished campus communities and individuals who have shown true dedication and leadership in their contribution to the team throughout the year. The individuals recognized each received a $250 scholarship.

International Culture Team Awardees

  • Honorary ICT Member Award: Arkansas Union
  • Country of the Year Awards: Japan and Panama
  • ICT Immersion Award: La Matanza, Panamanian Immersion
  • Outstanding ICT New Member Award: Macarena Arce
  • Outstanding ICT Member Award: Ayako Hirano
  • ICT Spirit Award: Emily Pham

Additionally, $100 scholarships were awarded to eight active International Culture Team members in recognition of their service to the organization. The awards and scholarships were generously given by Holcomb Elementary School; the Root Elementary School Parent Teacher Association and Xi Ai and Scott Fendley, both International Culture Team alumni.
