U of A College of Education and Health Professions to Honor Faculty, Staff

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The College of Education and Health Professions will honor faculty and staff members for outstanding work at the college’s annual spring meeting May 1.

“I hope everyone who knows these dedicated individuals will join us in congratulating them,” said Tom Smith, dean of the college. “Our faculty and staff are the reason our college is growing and experiencing success in many areas of health and education. Many of them go above and beyond the call, and this is just one way we can thank our outstanding faculty and staff.”

The College Council chooses the faculty honorees from nominations submitted, and the college’s Professional/Personal Enhancement Program for classified staff members coordinates the award process for classified staff. A new Non-Classified Administrative Council handles the award process for non-classified staff.

  • Stavros Kavouras, associate professor of exercise science, and Ed Bengston, assistant professor of educational leadership, George Denny STAR Award for outstanding service, teaching, advising and research
  • Michael Hevel, assistant professor of higher education, Rising STAR Award for outstanding all-around new faculty member
  • Hayriye Kayi-Aydar, assistant professor of TESOL/linguistically and culturally diverse education, Significant Research Award
  • Michelle Gray, assistant professor of kinesiology, Outstanding Mentoring and Advising Award
  • Chris Goering, associate professor of English education, Superior Service Award
  • Mike Wavering, associate professor of science education, and Lynn Koch, professor of rehabilitation education and research, Career Faculty Award

Staff awards

Classified staff awards were given for the fall and spring semesters.

  • Joyce Patrick, administrative support supervisor, Outstanding Overall Performance
  • Alexandra Streeter, administrative specialist, Outstanding Service to Students
  • Lana Aiken, accountant, Outstanding Service to Faculty/Staff

Fall winners and their awards:

  • Kaylin McLoud, former administrative specialist, Outstanding Overall Performance
  • Stephanie Gragg, administrative specialist, Outstanding Service to Students
  • Janet Johnson-Mertz, administrative specialist, Outstanding Service to Faculty/Staff

Non-classified staff awards were given for the academic year:

  • Lindsey Swagerty, academic counselor, Superior Service to Students
  • Leah Chamberlain, director of field placement and licensure, Superior Service to College
  • Lynne Hehr, director of the STEM Center for Mathematics and Science Education, Superior Service to Community

Interactive music sessions known as "music zoos" bring creative learning of musical instruments to the children in the center, as well as providing the music education students the chance to practice their teaching skills. 

New Faculty Teaching Portfolio Authors Recognized

The faculty members successfully completed the Teaching Portfolio and will be recognized at the Fall Teaching Awards ceremony hosted by the Cordes Teaching and Faculty Support Center and the Teaching Academy.
