FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Donald P. Judges has been named the interim associate vice provost for distance education at the University of Arkansas, taking on the role of second-in-command at the Global Campus beginning May 1.

Judges, now associate dean of graduate programs and experiential learning at the School of Law, will spend half of his time working with the Global Campus leadership team and the other half teaching courses as the law school’s E.J. Ball Professor of Law.

Provost Sharon Gaber appointed Judges to the new position.

“I am honored to have this opportunity to work with Dr. Reyes and the excellent team at Global Campus, helping to expand educational opportunities through the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville,” Judges said.

Judges joined the U of A faculty in 1989, teaching courses in constitutional law, law and psychology, evidence, criminal procedure and torts. He joined the law school’s leadership team in 2012.

“I feel confident Don will help steer the University of Arkansas in the right direction as our colleges and schools continue to develop new online programs and courses,” Gaber said.

Judges and the School of Law collaborated with the Global Campus to launch the online track of the master’s degree program in agricultural and food law in 2014. That program is one of more than 30 offered completely or primarily online by the University of Arkansas and which are showcased on the University of Arkansas ONLINE website.

“The Global Campus is excited that professor Judges will join us,” said Javier A. Reyes, vice provost for distance education and leader of the Global Campus. “Adding this new leadership post will help us continue our positive momentum and boost our efforts to reach the university’s goals in providing students with more access to educational offerings from the state’s flagship institution.”

Efforts to enhance continuing education in the past three years have resulted in a substantial increase in the university’s online offerings, an increase in enrollments in online courses, growth in “not for credit” programs targeted at professional and workforce development, and expansion of support services for faculty and different units on campus, Reyes said.

Judges earned his doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of Tulsa in 1999. He graduated with highest honors from the University of Maryland School of Law in 1983, where he was editor-in-chief of the Maryland Law Review. He earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Johns Hopkins University.

In addition to his university roles, Judges serves as reporter to the Arkansas Supreme Court Committee on Jury Instructions (Civil).
