This Week in the Visual and Performing Arts: April 24-May 1

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences will host several musical performances and literature readings, a play, a reception and an art exhibition this week. Students, faculty, staff and guests are encouraged to attend these events in the visual and performing arts.

TONIGHT

A reception for Noise, an exhibition by Laura Polaski, will be held at 5:30 p.m. Friday, April 24, in the Fine Arts Center Gallery.

Also on Friday, Christopher Johns II and Eric Barnett will give a saxophone recital at 6 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center's Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

Later that evening, Megan Clark and Diana Alice Otto will give readings of their works written in the Program in Creative Writing at 7 p.m. in Old Main's Giffels Auditorium.

To close Friday's events, the University of Arkansas New Music Ensemble will give a concert at 8 p.m. in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

THIS WEEKEND

Four recitals will take place Saturday, April 25, in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall. William Brani, accompanied by Michael Shuman (piano), will give a saxophone recital at 1 p.m., Josh Wilhelm and Taylor Ryan will give a percussion recital at 3:30 p.m., Patrick Bellah will give a cello recital at 6 p.m. and Robert Wiser will give a tuba recital at 8 p.m.

John Brilhart will give a French horn recital at 1 p.m. Sunday, April 26, in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

Later in Stella Boyle Smith, top music students will give the department's annual Honors Recital at 3 p.m.

Also on Sunday, Noise, by Laura Polaski, will close at 5 p.m. The exhibition may be viewed from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday and 2-5 p.m. Sunday in the Fine Arts Center Gallery.

Later that evening, Alfredo Maruri will give a saxophone recital at 7 p.m. in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

The closing performance of The Cherry Orchard by Anton Chekhov is Sunday, April 26, in the Fine Arts Center's University Theatre. Addional performances are at 8 p.m. Friday and Satuday, April 24 and 25. Tickets are $25 for adults, $15 for seniors and University of Arkansas faculty and staff and $5 for students with a valid student ID. MONDAY TO THURSDAY

The University of Arkansas Tuba and Euphonium Ensemble will give a performance at 6 p.m. Monday, April 27, in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

Also on Monday in Stella Boyle Smith, Michael Hanna will give a saxophone recital at 8 p.m.

The University of Arkansas Schola Cantorum, Concert Choir and Women's Chorus will give a performance at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 28, in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

Yudai Hironaka will give a euphonium recital at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 29, in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

Also in Stella Boyle Smith, Andrew Chu (violin) and Daryl Rojas (piano) will give a performance at 8 p.m.

The String Coalition will perform at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 30, in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

At the same time, Andrew Baker (oboe) and Andrew Stephens (bassoon) will perform at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 2925 Old Missouri Road. They will be accompanied by Helena Aung, Hannah Mindeman and Miroslava Panayotova (piano).

NEXT WEEKEND

Actor, author, activist and McIlroy Family Visiting Professor of Performing and Visual Arts Peter Coyote will give an author's talk and book signing at 7 p.m. Friday, May 1, at the Fayetteville Public Library.

At the same time, William Pittman and Kimberly Driggers will give readings of their works written in the Program in Creative Writing in Giffels Auditorium.

Later that evening, the University of Arkansas Children's Choir will give a concert at 7:30 p.m. in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.
