Alice M. Hammel to Give Lecture on How Music Can Help Create an Inclusive Classroom

The University of Arkansas Department of Music inside the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences is proud to host Alice M. Hammel as she presents a lecture titled "What a Teacher Can Be" in Worthington Hall of the Lewis E. Epley Jr. Band Building at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 9. 

Hammel is a leading researcher in teaching music to students with special needs. Her work focuses on the adaptation of methods and materials, learning styles, and teacher education preparation for students with special needs. She has presented her research at over 50 state and national conferences. She has been published by the Music Educators Journal, The Journal for Music Teacher Education, and the Virginia Music Educators Association. 

"We are so honored to have Dr. Hammel speak on campus", said Jann Knighten, assistant professor of music education.  "She has devoted her professional life to expanding learning opportunities for students with special needs through music education. Her insight and research is a powerful resource for all educators."  

Hammel received her Bachelor of Music Education from Shenandoah Conservatory, her Master of Music in music education from Florida State University, and her Doctor of Musical Arts in music education from Shenandoah University. She currently teaches for James Madison University, Virginia Commonwealth University, and Christopher Newport University. She is an active flautist and works with an independent flute studio.

She has received multiple awards honoring her commitment to music education and the inclusion of every and all students in music education. She has served as an MENC online networking mentor and is a national spokesperson for MENC, a member of the Music Educators National Conference, Music Teachers National Association, the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, Organization of Kodály Educators, Sigma Alpha Iota, and the Council for Exceptional Children.
